About this Weblog
March 4th, 2006Welcome to my sustainable living diary. This is my way of systematically improving my family’s environmental footprint and having a conversation with others about how to live a ecologically- and socially-conscious life in the north. Please leave a comment so the conversation isn’t completely one-sided!
To read from the beginning of the blog, visit the archive or start here and work your way forward by clicking on the top right link on each page.
My name is Kevin Kennedy. I live in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada near the shore of Yellowknife Bay in the North Arm of Great Slave Lake.
I hope this site may be useful to others who live in the North and elsewhere. Mostly I want to give myself a public excuse to systematically mend my greedy, polluting, consuming ways. I am trying to be a case study not a shining example. In fact, I’m a bit concerned about seeming holier-than-thou. That isn’t the idea at all.
The title of this blog “Clay and Wattles” comes from a line in the poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” by W.B. Yeats. The poem is a dream about a better place. The poet says he will “arise and go” there to find the peace he longs for.

Doug mentioned this to me when he got home last night. Congratulations, you are an inspiration. I was just wondering, do you think your journey would inspire other people…during Earth Week? I imagined a handful of people could come to a workshop with all sorts of data with them (litres of heating oil used in a year, number of km covred by vehicle, etc) and you could take them through the calculations…what do you think? Sort of a hands-on approach, maybe even be connected to Internet in the room so people can calculate right then and there…

That is a great idea, France. I would be happy to give it a try.
p.s. Thanks for the comments.

Hello to the whole family! I just found this – I had no idea you were running a blog! Sounds like you’re doing all kinds of great stuff in YK for sustainable living. Here in Antigonish, the county and town governments have begun strictly enforcing recycling and composting and will pick both up from the curb (much like Halifax). Compost breaks down here like I can’t believe!
Can’t wait to try the cake recipe you’ve posted.
Have you checked out http://www.thenextagenda.ca ? You might find their site interesting – they just started up in the past few months, but their gathering steam.
.
Ahem. I of course meant, “They’re gathering steam.” The posting jumped the gun on me.
Good to hear what you’ve been up to!
.
Hey Leah!
Great to hear from you. Cool link. Looks like it will be worth adding to my regular reading.
.
I am not sure if I agree with that last post.

I strongly believe that one of the simplist forms of helping the planet is to garden your own food. Help grow plants and create more oxygen. You have a great blog here. I will be glad to come back and view it often.
